A Magnificent Pair of Chinese Cloisonné Vases Achieves £4,000 at Auction

Decorative Arts: 18th/19th Century Chinese Cloisonné Vases

On February 12th, a striking pair of Chinese cloisonné vases from the late 18th to early 19th century achieved an impressive £4,000 at auction. These large and beautifully crafted vessels exemplify the finest traditions of Chinese metalwork, with their intricate detailing and vibrant colors drawing strong interest from bidders.

Each vase, of squat baluster form, is adorned with a dense field of polychrome lotus flowers and scrolling foliage set against a striking turquoise ground. The design features a trompe l’oeil tied ribbon motif, a charming and sophisticated decorative touch that enhances their elegance. The lappet borders further contribute to their refined aesthetic, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship characteristic of Qing dynasty cloisonné.

Sold for £4,000 (plus BP) by Catherine Southern Auctioneers & Valuers Ltd in Kent. February 12th 2025.

Adding to their provenance and historical significance, one vase retains a paper label from Thomas Agnew & Son, a renowned London-based art dealership with a storied history of handling fine and decorative arts. The inscription, which appears to reference a former owner at Fern Walk, Plowden, hints at the distinguished provenance of these remarkable pieces.

Fitted with metal liners, these vases are not only a testament to the artistry of Chinese enameling but also an exquisite example of decorative art that continues to captivate collectors today. Their strong performance at auction underscores the enduring appeal of high-quality Chinese cloisonné, particularly from this period.

For collectors and enthusiasts, this sale reaffirms the desirability of exceptional Qing-era cloisonné, where rarity, craftsmanship, and provenance combine to create truly remarkable pieces.
